Background

Before engaging with The Baxter Project, FS was at a particularly low point in their life. Described as volatile, angry and upset, they struggled with self-regulation — which adversely affected their school attendance and academic performance. Communication was a significant hurdle; during stressful times, FS found it difficult to make eye contact or articulate their feelings, leading to avoidance of lessons and social interactions.

Their coping mechanisms included self-harm and, tragically, a suicide attempt, accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and a belief that they were fundamentally different from their peers. Traditional approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) proved ineffective due to difficulties maintaining focus.

Our Intervention

🤝
Building Trusting RelationshipsSessions provided a safe, supportive environment allowing FS to express feelings and discuss struggles openly. Over time they developed a trusting relationship with our practitioners.
🐾
Animal-Assisted EngagementThe presence of our companion dogs played a crucial role in facilitating communication and trust-building. Interacting with the dogs shifted focus and made it easier to open up. Walking around school with a dog — an activity that would typically cause anxiety — became more manageable.
🧠
Developing Coping StrategiesThrough guided interactions FS learned effective coping mechanisms to manage stress and emotions, leading to a reduction in self-harm. Our work empowered them to understand how to help themselves and maintain safety during stressful situations.
📚
Re-engagement with EducationThe Baxter Project played a pivotal role in helping FS re-engage with schooling, addressing avoidance behaviours and supporting academic progress.

"My mental health has progressed greatly since working with The Baxter Project. I can manage my life better, handle many social situations much better. The dog breaks the ice for me — it always felt too awkward before."

FS, Young Person

"The Baxter Project has been the only support FS has received after nothing from CAMHS. It has given FS something to focus on and been a tool for me as a parent to open communication with her — she is always keen to talk about the dogs."

Parent of FS

"I believe their confidence and self-belief are flourishing. The Baxter Project has been pivotal in FS's change, providing constant support and a positive strategy that truly works."
